The Rotato Rocks! Nov 27, 2005
By Jan Borelli Now, you can get the Rotato which is a hand cranked operation or the Rotato Express which is an automatic gadget. I prefer the Rotato because the wiring tends to get misplaced in my gadget loving household. Here's the deal... if you (and/or your family) loves potatoes (fried, diced, mashed... you get the idea), then you really must have a terrific potato peeler. And quite frankly, there is none finer. The hand cranked variety of the Rotato will last you through thousands of potatoes; and you will look like a whiz kid. This is a great thing to give for xmas-- a sort of generic xmas present that will be loved long after this xmas is over. Also, it comes with extra blades (because they do wear out) that you can locate in its base. I bought an extra set (at a very reasonable price) because I have broken a few of the blades along the way.

Great gadget! Feb 22, 2005
By A. Troya My mother has a touch of arthritis in her hands and peeling potatoes was a a bit of a chore for her. My sister bought this device for her several years ago and it's worked very well. You still have to manually peel a small portion of the top and bottom of the potato, but the Rotato has made the potato peeling job quicker and easier for her.

Great product Aug 04, 2005
By AV Saint I received this item as a gift, and i have used it to peel not only potatoes, but carrots and apples too. The blades break easily though, so make sure you buy additional blades. Cleaning is easy to do. Great product. I would have preferred the rotato express though.

Waste of Money Jan 09, 2008
By L. Thomas

I received the Rotato from my husband due to my constant groanings regarding having to peel so many potatos for both Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. What a waste of time and money. The Rotato worked terrific for the first three potatos....then the blade became too dull to do any more. We replaced the blade assuming that it wouldn't happen again, but we were wrong. We were able to peel no more than three potatos at a time before the blade became dull; and these were TINY potatos! Also, we disliked that we lost SO much of the potato when we peeled it. If we peeled a smaller potato, it wasn't even worth our time because we lost so much of it that there was hardly anything left of the potato to cook. The makers of The Rotato should be ashamed of themselves for selling such a worthless product.

only works on potato and hard stuff / inefficient Apr 30, 2010
By Jethro Polak I got this thing about 2 weeks ago. it is well made for a $15 item which is cheap plastic but if you treat it right you wont have a problem. The problem is that when it peels the skin off of any vegetable, it cuts deep enough into the fruit that it wastes a substantial amount of good food under the skin. It substantially reduces the size of any vegetable. It should come with different radius cutting blades for different things. A shallow blade for potato and cucumber, a medium blade for kiwi and potato with lots of imperfections, and a deep blade for oranges and lemons. when I try to peel over ripe fruit, the arm has enough pressure that it wont go down, it just cuts deeper and deeper. the tension of the arm should be adjustable, but it isn't.
The good:
Innovative design
Built to last at least a few months
Much faster then hand peeler
Makes it possible to peel 10 to 30 lbs potato in 15 to 45 minutes. just a bit time consuming.
Makes lots of scraps for your rabbits
The bad:
Wastes a substantial amount of food
Could and should have better ergonomics
If you have a large family and use lots of potatoes, this is going to be worth getting. I only recommend this if you don't mind wasting about 1/16 of each potato to scraps.
I might be updating this review some time.
