How to Introduce Yourself to Ceramic Blades Apr 29, 2010 The fact that you are even reading this suggests that you already know the arguments in favor of ceramic blades. Ceramic blades are harder than steel blades, can be made much sharper than steel blades, hold their edge ten times longer than steel blades, are lighter than steel blades, won't brown foods, transfer a metallic taste or smell, or rust.
You probably also know the disadvantages of ceramic blades. Unlike steel blades ceramic blades can chip or break so you want to avoid dropping them, tossing them in a sink or kitchen drawer, or arguably even washing them in a dishwasher. (Most ceramic peelers come in fitted plastic packing material that can be saved.)
So the only remaining question is which peeler to choose. A Kyocera Ceramic Y Peeler is available in six different handle colors.
(Another handle color is only available in this special set Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 5 1/2 Inch Santoku Knife and Y Peeler Set Pink Handle)
A different Y-shaped Kyocera Ceramic Swiss Peeler without the plastic side corers is also available.
Right-handers can choose from another quartet of peelers:
Kyocera Vertical Ceramic Peeler Black Handle,
Kyocera Vertical Ceramic Peeler Red Handle,
Kyocera Mega Ceramic Peeler Black Handle,
Kyocera Mega Ceramic Peeler Red Handle.
Finally, an adjustable Kyocera Ceramic Perfect Peeler is also available.
Note: Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic paring knives are also available in matching handle colors:
Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Black Handle,
Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Blue Handle,
Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Green Handle,
Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Orange Handle,
Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Red Handle,
Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Yellow Handle,
and one other blade color:
Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Black Handle, Black Blade.

Very good, if not quite perfect Oct 15, 2009 I've had mine for well over five years -- maybe ten. (It looks slightly different from what's pictured here, so mine might behave differently.) It's stayed sharp, it's great on potatoes (regular or sweet), ginger, summer squash... not so good on eggplant, and it bogs down on kiwifruit and mangoes. In general, anything without a certain firmness under the peel clogs this peeler. The blade on mine pops out easily -- maybe too easily -- and it's all to easy to put in backwards. Dishwasher-safe, and the ceramic has not chipped despite a dozen drops (onto linoleum or vinyl, mind: I wouldn't depend on it surviving a blade-first impact on a hard floor).
Perhaps the things I like about this are better provided by some other design, and as mine has just gone missing (accidentally knocked into the wastebasket, I fear), maybe I should buy one of the other Kyocera peelers.
Awesome! Best Peeler! Aug 04, 2009 This works great! I bought three of these because my local store only carries the metal ones. Highly recommended!
really only good for potatoes Jul 13, 2009 I could not get it to work on fruits. I tried mangos, peaches, apples, etc. The rotating blade gets pretty annoying. However, it works pretty good on potatos, taro, carrots, and similar. The potato "eye" remover works pretty good as well. Overall, I prefer my cheapy OXO peeler.
