Outstanding mill. Very convenient. Jul 18, 2007
By Michael D These mills are available from a few vendors on Amazon. The white and black are fine. The yellow is coarse. The mill is a little larger than an old-style McCormick glass spice jar, and slightly more attractive in real life than in the pictures.

Use Small Peppercorn or salt Oct 02, 2008
By Brian J. Buehler

I purchased both the fine and coarse grind versions of the Kyocera Ceramic Mill. At the local grocer, picked up a small jar of peppercorn and put half into each of the two grinders. As I am used to fine ground pepper, I tried that grinder first and had excellent results. Sadly, the coarse mill seemed to have trouble ingesting the pepper - I took the lid off (the grinding part), put in a few peppercorns and gave it several turns. The peppercorns just rolled around as they were too big to fall into the teeth of the grinder. Turns out I much prefer the flavor of coarse ground pepper and have begun a search to find a more suitable grinder for any size of peppercorn.
Edited to add: I've been using this grinder for salt and have found that it works very well as a salt mill - four stars as a salt grinder.

Works great! Jul 02, 2008

So far, I've used these for peppercorns and various varieties of sea salt. I prefer my peppercorns to be ground a little finer than this one grinds (after all, it's a course grinder), but the course grinders grind my sea salt perfectly -- just the way I like it. I'll use these course grinders for my salts and the the Kyocera Mill with the white or black tops for my peppercorns. I highly recommend Kyocera Mills!

NOT for pepper! Jul 27, 2010
By David G. Anderson I rated the yellow-top Kyocera very good with its ceramic grinder mechanism for salt and small spices, BUT it won't even swallow a peppercorn. It's round and round and round in the circle game with nary a flake of pepper in sight.
Why not alert buyers to this predictable issue?

best grinder in my kitchen Jun 13, 2010
By jadele I really like these grinders - so much that I'm going to buy two more. When the lid is on they're complete closed so everything inside and out stays clean. They're easy to use, and spices grind nicely. I'm using them for cumin, cardomon, coriander, and salt, and will probably add pepper and flax seed for the next two.
