I am one of the "one in a million" owners that knows first hand the utter heartbreak and devastation that comes from losing a cherished dog to a collar accident. My 15 month old Rottweiler (75lbs) was strangled to death by her rolled leather collar (not a choke) while playing outside with another dog. The other dog's tooth got caught in the buckle and he strangled her in his twisting attempt to get free. She was much bigger and stronger, but it didn't matter. It was fast and too quiet to alert someone in the home to what was happening.
We now have a new puppy and this is the only collar she wears around the house. It is true that it does come free on occasion, but that typically means that she was stuck on something and pulled hard enough to break apart the clasp. The clasp is easily reassembled and there is no damage to the collar. If there are times where you do not want the collar to separate with pressure, all you need to do is link both D-rings together, like with the buckle of a leash when you go for a walk. I suppose you could do this with a carabiner or something for other circumstances where you don't want the collar to separate, but that would probably defeat the purpose.

All dogs should have safety / break-away collars. We bought these collars for our dogs who like to wrestle after one dog's jaw got caught in the collar of our other dog, hurting his jaw and choking the other dog to the point where we nearly lost him. I didn't think we needed to worry about collar safety because we are almost always with our dogs and often remove the collars when we leave them home alone. This collar does what it is supposed to do and will snap if pulled on too strongly. You can easily snap it back together and put it back on your dog. Be sure to use both d-rings if you attach a leash to the collar and your dog is a puller, as he may pull hard enough to break out of the collar. We use harnesses to walk our dogs and twice now I haven't been paying attention to what I clip the leash to and he has pulled so hard that he broke out of the collar. Lesson learned and I now always look at where I'm hooking it up (to the harness rather than the collar, but if you use both rings you can safely attach it to the collar).

I bought 4 of these collars (2 for each of my dogs), after a local tragedy where a 1 year old dog died because his collar got stuck on a branch when he went for a swim and he drowned. Well, it works. But, it works too good. I take my dogs to the woods where they run off leash and play with other dogs. If they are out of my site (in the wooded area) and start wrestling they come back with out the collar. Any play biting that has paws or jaws in contact with the collar allows the safety latch to open. I have found the collars a few times and reused them. Locally it's no big deal my dogs are very good with voice command and know where they are. I wanted to be able to use them when we camped, but, won't now because if they lose them, they also lose their ids.
It was a nice idea. I just wish maybe there was a way that they wouldn't release so easily. A few times when my dog was running and leaping for a ball it has come off as well. It just takes a minor twist with some pressure from the neck and it comes undone.
Again the theory is nice and I hope it does save some pets.

This is the best collar on the market:practical, rugged, awesome, need I say more? I have two dogs that each have one and they are very active and they have gotten caught in cituiations that requied the collar to break, great feature, also great price.

Given the number of strangulations of dogs due to collars, these breakaways should be standard issue thoughout America-They should be promoted by every vet in the US and should be available for purchase at every pet store from coast to coast.
This is an excellent product. Highly recommended!
